The Town of Fort Erie is currently hiring School Crossing Guards and Stand-by School Crossing Guards to help keep our students safe as they travel to and from school. If you are looking for an opportunity to serve the community, and promote a friendly, safe environment for our school children, we’d love to hear from you!
As a School Crossing Guard, you will play a vital role in your community by ensuring the safety of children at designated school crossings, promoting awareness of pedestrian safety rules, and creating a friendly, respectful, and welcoming presence each day.
As a School Crossing Guard, you will be required to work on all school days from September 2025 to June 2026.
As a successful candidate you are required to have:
- An Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent
- Good sensory awareness and strong concentration
- The ability to stand for extended periods
- Reliability and access to transportation to your assigned location
- The ability to work outside in any and all weather conditions
A fitness assessment and police background check satisfactory to the Corporation will be required.
Stand-by School Crossing Guards:
As a Stand-by, you will be called in on an as-needed basis. Please state your intentions when you apply whether it is for a School Crossing Guard or Stand-by School Crossing Guard position.
This position offers a pay rate of $21.81 per hour, based on 5.00 to 11.25 hours per week.
*Candidates who have worked previously in this position for the Town are required to reapply.

Position Objective
To direct and coordinate the safe movement of pedestrians and vehicles at designated crossings during the school year.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Use a sign and hand signals to safely escort pedestrians across the street by identifying gaps in traffic and stopping traffic as necessary.
- Signal vehicles to resume normal traffic flow.
- Accurately record the name and/or description of offending individuals and/or vehicles and/or license plate numbers and report the information to the supervisor.
- Report unsafe behaviour on the part of pedestrians to the supervisor.
Education & Experience
· OSSD or equivalent or documented experience considered equivalent by The Corporation
Knowledge
· Knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act, regulations, standards
· Knowledge of Town policies and procedures
· Knowledge of safe school crossing signs, signals and techniques
Skills & Ability
· Ability to clearly and effectively communicate information/instructions verbally and using a sign and hand signals
· Ability to read, interpret and apply relevant legislation, standards, practices and procedures
· Ability to regularly report to assigned crossing on time, several times daily
· Good interpersonal skills; helpful, courteous and professional
· Concern for image
Work Demands
· Must report to assigned crossing on-time
· Work day is scheduled in split shifts
· Work is performed outdoors, in all weather conditions
· Exposure to vehicular traffic
· Job requires a police clearance certificate satisfactory to The Corporation
· Job requires satisfactory fitness assessment by a medical practitioner
· Job requires sufficient hearing and vision to ensure the safety of pedestrians and vehicle operators
· Almost continuous standing and/or walking; stepping up to and down from curbs
· Ability to hold a crossing sign and perform physical hand and arm gestures
· Some disruption to lifestyle due to split schedule
· Maintain assigned safety equipment
· Follows established procedures and policies; limited independent decision-making
· Regular inside contacts at management levels; regular outside contacts with public
